As Davros coughed, heaved and spluttered, Lytton watched the Creator of the Daleks physically age in front of him. It seemed even he couldn’t cope with the rigours of ninety years in solitary confinement.

‘Are you all right?’ Lytton didn’t sound entirely interested.

‘There are malfunctions in my life-support system,’ whined Davros. ‘I need an engineer.’ And as though to emphasise the fact, he let out a long, asthmatic cough followed by a toe-numbing bout of wheezing.

‘You must board the Dalek ship,’ insisted Lytton. ‘We have everything you require.’

But Davros wasn’t interested. ‘In case I need stabilising I must remain close to my cryo chamber.’

Lytton explained there was a time factor, that the Vipod Mor had transmitted a distress signal and, with possible patrol ships in the area, a taskforce could soon be with them. The mercenary shifted uneasily. ‘Will you be able to find an antidote?’

Davros nodded.

‘A lot of work has already been done,’ added Lytton.

The Creator wasn’t impressed. ‘I am Davros. The Daleks are my creation. I shall genetically re-engineer them.’

Lytton smiled. ‘We have a laboratory prepared for you.’

Davros still wasn’t interested. ‘I shall work here. In what was my prison.’
